Loved this. My cousin and i - who are Reeves descendents in the U.S. - visited Ranston and the village of Iwerne Courtney about 6 years ago and were given a tour of the estate by the owner's daughter-in-law. Lovely land and the village has the best pub we encountered in 14 days in England. Sorry to hear that Mrs. fleming died.

If you go to Dorset, be sure to find the Ryves Almshouses in Blandford Forum. One of only two builidngs that survived the fire that destroyed the entire city.

Your work is amazing!! I hope I can make mine as well as you! Can you please post how you made the bodice? And for the final step of the Tutu when you placed the feathers onto the Tutu, did you just glue it right on to the top layer? Thanks!

I appreciate your post. Though, the point of this blog entry wasn't to imply Portman didn't deserve an Oscar. I did, however, write about the impact I thought this controversy had. Even in <a href="http://www.jerrilynnreeves.com/2011/04/portman-vs-lane-in-black-swan-my-review/" rel="nofollow">this blog entry I did not say that Portman had no right to an Oscar</a>.

Although I appreciate you putting to rest who was dancing when (and it shouldn't matter anyway), the Oscar wasn't "Best Actress in a Dance Movie." The Oscar was for "Best Actress." She won because of her performance as the lead actress in a movie about a dancer that descends slowly into paranoia and madness while she is trying to dance "perfectly." That is why she won. Hell, look at Audrey Hepburn. She got nominated for "My Fair Lady" and she didn't even have her VOICE in the songs! (the producers used a voice double at the last minute because they felt that Audrey's voice was weak on film) But, Actors and Actresses get Oscar nods for OVERALL performances, not just "who's legs/feet/body is this?" I agree that she should have given a shout out to ALL members of the crew, but you have to remember, ever since *(i can't think of who did it offhand)'s* speech that ran for like 10 minutes, they limited the speeches to 2 minutes. Not a lot of time to thank EVERYONE. I'm fairly certain (And no, I haven't watch it so I don't know unequivocally) that she thanked the ENTIRE crew of the movie (putting everyone under one umbrella). Just because she didn't mention her TWO (yes, two, because Lane wasn't there the whole time filming) dance doubles doesn't mean she isn't grateful for their help on the movie. All in all, I think that the blogger who posted up nasty comments about Natalie is to blame, because I think that many people would have watched this movie with total enjoyment (before the Oscars and in the theaters) knowing that it was just entertainment and not some "hooplah" designed to smear a fine actress. Besides, you watch the movie more for the story (or at least, you should watch it for that reason) and let the dancing be like the special effects: a tool to help tell the story.

I'm so excited that you posted these pictures! Thank you! I was equally excited about finding the reprint of the book Reliques of the Rives (I found it on Amazon) last year! I was looking at it last night and looking at the pictures of Ranston which are poor in the book so it was fun to see these photos that you found! I live in the US. I want to go and see Ranston this year or next. I also want to see better pictures of of the Ryves ancestors which apparently the Dorset Historical Society has. I'll share pictures. Are you on Facebook?

After reading this again, I had another idea. Sometimes we hold a lot of confidence in our technique because inherit insecurity in our own dancing. Sometimes it seems to only way to relief that insecurity is to hold on to the only thing seemingly quantifiable--technique. It is a lot harder to just be secure with where you are at the moment.

Wow, love the costume - it looks EXACTLY like the one from the movie! Great job!

I was wondering how long it took you to create this entire costume.

I do not dance ballet, and even though I watched the film without consciously knowing there was a double, I knew that not everything I saw was real. I am fairly used to knowing that things you see in films are all a fake. When watching the DVD extras, I was actually more surprised to find out that the orchestra was not there, or that it was Natalie herself who wrote WHORE on the mirror.

I loved your scene by scene analysis and I read it all. But I have to say that I believe your conclusion is the same as the editor's (and Aronofsky's).

The student kit contains about four different color foundations--including white, bruise and blood kit, spirit gum and remover, several different brushes, setting powder, stuff to make your hair white, it has some black liner, brown liner, lip liner, blush. I also order a metallic kit that had both white and silver metallic colors. I used those on the eyes. Really the student kit might be over-kill; however, I found many of the items very useful. You can get the black swan look with white shiny eyeliner, black liquid liner, and some white makeup. Putting on a base layer foundation and doing the white over-top of it--which will cause a bit of blending...which makes the white look more subtle and less in your face...plus you can blend it a bit into your jaw line so it doesn't make a nasty white line...a softer transition into the natural skin color.

I have a question about the makeup: what type of Ben Nye student kit did you use? Did it just contain black and white or other colors?

I made a total of three tiaras all of which had various heights. I thought the height that looked the best was about 3.5 inches. The one I am wearing is about 4 and I feel like it is too tall. Lori's, who you can see in my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27394904@N04/sets/72157627630068192/" rel="nofollow">Dragon*Con flickr album</a>, tiara height is at 3.5".

I spent hours scouring the internet: try using Google image search using the Large option only. That helped me find some really clear photographs. I was afraid my tutu would have been too floopy too; that is why I went with a professionally made rehearsal tutu. I think you did a fine job with your costume. I especially liked the back scratches you added! Too bad about your foot. :( I hope you get better soon and congratulations on winning best female costume! Thanks for sharing pictures of your costume!

This is amazing...how did you find clear pictures of her costume? I zoomed in on screen caps, scoured the Internet, and could not get a really clear image of what I was supposed to be making for my halloween costume! I just sort of "winged-it," and wish i had your advice before-hand. I made a black swan and a white swan costume. My tu-tu's re too floppy, and i didn't think of using clay for the tiara. I did win best female costume at the part though ;)

Thank you very, very much for taking the time to share about your project. I am in the process of finishing up my Black swan costume. Your posts, especially for the crown, were very helpful and detailed. I was inspired to make a Black swan costume since January. I had a feeling that a lot of sewing is going to be involved, so I wanted to start early. While searching for reference photos, I came across your site. Getting the tutu from tutu.com helped soooo very much.
One thing I like to share is that I used a bodice pattern from tutu.com. I made a mock one out of cotton material and fit it before I proceeded to the final one. I used large hook and bar closers for the back of the bodice. Then I inserted a steel bone in the back to stablize it (the ladies from tutu.com were very helpful and suggested this). I tried hook and eye tape, but I had a heck of a time opening and closing the bodice. Not to mention, the back of it looked bunchy. The individual hooks and bars worked out better. Elastic was later sewn onto the bodice for shoulder straps. It was a lot of sewing and I am glad I started early!
I will be wearing the costume for Halloween and for a convention the following year.
Again thank you for sharing your work and thank you for letting me share, too ^_____^

I checked out ebay and saw some costumes, but not any where near the price I would sell a version of mine. The tutu skirt alone was $200.00. I spent hours researching, purchasing materials, and construction my costume. It took me months. My costume was tailored to my body as well, which is something that would be hard to do with someone who lived far away. There isn't any way on the planet I could do a bunch of these costumes --- or even one for that matter -- before Halloween. I would need to quit my real job, which I love, just to make one. The time, materials, and skills to make this costume would justify a costly costume, and I don't think most people would be willing to spend more than $500.00 on a costume simply for Halloween. Trust me, I would have to consider a price tag around $700.00 before I would make this Black Swan costume for another person. That doesn't even include the tiara and buntopper you see in the photographs.

Thanks for the compliment and/or suggestion though!

I saw so-called "replica" costumes on ebay being sold for a lot of money, and they were terrible... if you sell these, you can make yourself a whole lot of money, especially right before Halloween!! Have you ever thought of selling your work?

Quite organically really. Just took ripped pieces of tulle and sewed it to the areas of the tutu I wanted. I also stretched, ripped, and pulled at it to make it look less perfect. More frayed. I really didn't put much thought in it...I just wanted it to look not so perfect, ripped, and stressed. I added it around the bodice base, but it really depends on what you are sewing the fluff. Just concentrate more on the feel, look, or texture than the exact placement. :)

The only part of the tiara where there was metal and that metal had clay shaped around it was in the center and maybe just a tiny bit coming from the sides. The majority of it was the clay pieces glued together. The wire in the center gives a nice study base to start putting your clay pieces together. Plus you have to anchor the whole piece to the wire base and this was done through that front piece of wire. I found it very difficult to get the shapes I wanted by using the wire. It kind-of looked messy and was a bit bulky. I found it easier to shape the clay pieces without the wire. That helped it look more like the movie tiara.

You did a beautiful job recreating the whole outfit!

Was just wondering how many of the little pieces you glued on compared to how much of the clay you just built all at once together on the wire base. Is there an advantage to gluing the pieces together versus just making it all at once as one big piece on the wire? Does it have to do with the strength of the tiara or maybe with the drying time?

Thank You!

I totally would love to do a more accurate version of that headdress. Your was AMAZING! So was the dress! I'll have to send you a picture of the one I did. If of course you are the person I am thinking about.

I think you could charge more - you list your materials at ~$150 and for than many hours of work... and your crown was perfect in person (saw you up close at D*C :)

I'm just saying, I think you could charge more and it's well worth it!

Played out or not...lots of other Black Swans...etc...whatever! If you do this costume right, you are sure to stick out. Yeah, two weeks or so before Halloween isn't a good time to start this project. Firstly, it would be nearly impossible -- unless you make yours -- to get a black tutu right now. Trust me...my boyfriend is going as "fat" swan, and I had to look high and low just to find a tutu for him....and I was trying to find him the cheesiest tutu I could. I am going to add a white panty and ruffles to my tutu before Halloween, and in the future I am changing out the leotard for a bodice with hook and eyes in the back. Then I think I will be completely satisfied. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed my version!

VERY, VERY impressive work! I wanted to do this costume for Halloween this year and my friend talked me out of it because she said it would be "played out" by now. I wish I hadn't listened to her because after seeing your beautiful costume I now regret it. I supposed I could frantically throw it together but I want mine to look as authentic as yours and that takes time. At any rate, from one detailed costumer to another, you did an awesome job! :)

The tutu base is made from 40-denier nylon net. The top layer, which is a tutu overlay an is tacked to the top of the tutu, has three layers: a 40-denier nylon layer (not ruffled and not pleated), black organza fabric (I think the movie version of the costume probably used some type of silk), and bird cage veiling on the very top layer. If you look at the movie costume, the top layer of the tutu isn't very transparent. It does not look like tulle.

On my costume there are a few places I did use tulle: the double pleats on the front bodice and to make what I called swan fluff...all of these items are on the tutu bodice, not on the tutu skirt. I'm still working on my <a href="http://www.jerrilynnreeves.com/2011/09/making-your-black-swan-tutu/" rel="nofollow">tutu construction page</a>, but you should check it out anyways. The materials I used are listed there.

Wow...I really wish I could....I can tell you in general. There is a picture of the clay on my blog. It is a light weight clay. You will need some 18 gauge black wire. The glue I mention below. Black metallic spray paint; gun metal gray acrylic paint; high gloss acrylic spray paint finish. The rhinestones and their settings would be a bit hard and time consuming for myself to just off the top of my hand tell you what I used. I would have to go through my receipts...if I still have them. I know I used four large rectangle crystal stones and around 9 way smaller black ones. I also added a few beads in there too. I purchased those from Michaels. I know I purchased the stones from http://www.glitzonline.com/ and the settings from a company in Hong Kong and it took about five weeks for those to get here--and I ordered bulk because that is the only way I could get them (meaning I only need four settings for the large crystals but I had to order a package of 12, etc--which was okay because I was making more than one...I used four on our buntoppers so it actually worked out perfectly for me...but this would not be so good for you.). The clear stones are rather large--second to largest size if I remember correctly and are about $5 a piece if you buy them individually. Then I ordered a gross count of the black ones that are in the 14 something size range. I could not find round ones in the size that I wanted.

In short you will need -- clay -- wire -- black spray paint -- gun metal gray paint -- clear gloss finish -- rhinestones -- rhinestone settings -- a smaller gauge wire for the rhinestone settings. If you want me to give you a brand name, size, quantity listing...I'm afraid at this moment I am a little too busy to do that. I am working on another costume project....I haven't even had the time to finish my black swan costume tutu guide. Sorry! Wish I could be more detailed for you in this short amount of time that you have. I think even without the crystals you would have a mighty fine tiara. That aspect really increased the cost of my tiara making...$20.00 (not including shipping or the settings) alone in just the clear ones!

The glue I used was Aleene’s® Platinum Bond 7800™ All-Purpose Adhesive. Another glue I heard was really good is E6000; however, when I look at the surface/type combinations I didn't like what I read--so I went with the 7800. I'm not sure about the epoxy; you could always try a couple pieces. I'd probably let it set longer than two hours and then give it a little stress test to see how well it holds up.

Hi,

What kind of glue did you use? I looked at the pics and read the description but couldn't find the type. Do you think any sort of 2-ton 2-hour set epoxy would do? Thanks!

It was very light, actually. It stayed on very well after the ribbon and bobby pins were used. Lori performed some ballet in hers. The heaviest part of the tiara isn't the clay; it is the rhinestones. That being said; don't get all commando with your tiara. They are fragile. You wouldn't want to go tossing them about. I didn't break any though.

Kind-of hard to say. I made two bun-toppers, and three crowns (one of which I didn't like). I also made a bunch of little pieces that didn't get used because they didn't fit the design. For all of these I used on whole package. So I guess you could say a quarter or a package. The wire mesh I tried to use...nope you wont use it...that idea did not work. I just didn't have another photograph without it. :)

Nope. I used a net fabric first. On this net fabric I sewed the rhinestones on---I bought the type you could sew on. Then when it was sewn on, for extra security, I glued them to the netting. Then I sewed the net to the tutu/tulle (I didn't use tulle...but if that is what you are using...)

Oh and one more question - how heavy did it end up to be? Did it easily stay in place once you pinned it or was it cumbersome?

The duct tape part is a body form that you dress like a mannequin. It will stretch out your fabric so you can sew or glue on it without worrying about things popping off when you actually put it on your body. Check out my <a href="http://www.facebook.com/?sfrm=1#!/jerrilynnreeves?sk=photos" rel="nofollow">Facebook album</a>; it has some pictures of my duct tape body form dressed with my leotard. You do not wear this at all. It is only used while you are creating your costume.

By fake rhinestones, I am assuming that you mean acrylic, or plastic. Any glass type rhinestones are still rather expensive whether they are Swarvoski or not. I would try Michaels. I know I saw some sew-on ones at Hancock Fabric too. You will definitely notice a difference in sheen/shine when moving from glass based rhinestones to plastic. Aside from the sew-on types, I think you will run into issues on how to apply these to your costume. Glue is not the most secure thing in the world, and its hard to apply--especially considering the quantity of stones applied to the bodice.

I have a question please. What do you mean exactly on the duct tape molding for the leotard - did you wear this under the leotard? Also, do you know where I can find the large fake rhinestones?

Sorry I couldn't do it for you sooner. I didn't expect the crowns to be such a hit and didn't order extra supplies when I was making them the first time! I plan on making another tiara for myself after Halloween because I wasn't entirely satisfied with it--I am super-duper picky :). I will be ordering materials and plan ordering some extras just in case I get a request in the future. I'll probably sell my old tiara after I make myself another one. But....I plan on wearing this one for Halloween. I want to make the other one for some events next year.

Thanks so much for your response. Unfortunately I would need it for Halloween and you would not have enough time to create it since I would definitely want the crystals. I have you saved in my favorites and will contact you should I need something in the future. You did an awesome job and the tiara is gorgeous! Thanks again! Lisa

I only made two of these tiaras: one for myself and one for my friend. If I were to make one by request, a tiara without crystals would be $200.00 and a tiara with crystals would be $350.00--the crystals on the tiara are Swarovksi. In addition, the findings for the crystals on the tiara would have to be ordered from Hong Kong. It took about five weeks to receive the package. I couldn't find any domestic sources for these materials. The construction process would take at least 6 weeks with crystals (taking in account the time it takes to ship and receive the metal crystal findings) and three weeks for a tiara without crystals. I realize that sounds rather expensive, but it does take a lot of time and patience to put one of these together. I would estimate about 40 hours of hands-on time--at least. That doesn't include time for clay, glue, or paint dry times.

Great tutorial. Very detailed, and easy to follow. Without any tutorial , it's definitely hard to make one, but by providing us the step by step process of making it, that's really a great help for your readers. Thanks for sharing!

Good question! I totally forgot to mention that aspect. I tied on the crown ends a semi-transparent brownish colored ribbons. I would wrapped those around the back of my head and pin the ribbon down with hair pins. Then, on the crown near the back on both sides, I would pin through the crown's wire frame to my hair. The bun-topper covered the ribbons very well. I haven't written a post on the bun-toppers, which is the hair comb that sits above the bun.

I will be posting more details on this when I update my blog this weekend. The feathers are attached only to the tutu net plate--the very first image on the tutu shows the undecorated tutu with a net plate safety pinned to it. The feathers however have their own base (netting and black felt) before getting sewn to the tutu overlay. The same applies for all the other trims. They are only sewn to the net plate, the black overlay material (organza), and/or the birdcage veiling. The entire overlay, which includes the net plate, black organza, birdcage veiling, rhinestones, and feathers will be one solid piece, so to speak. That decorated overlay then is stitched to the waist band. The outer edge of the tutu gets tacked in place to the top couple layers in few spots....so when you flip your tutu upside down, the overlay stays attached to your tutu base.

Check back for more updates as I continue to write about this. I will be providing some photographs too, which you may find helpful.

Hi there,
You've done a great job with this costume. I wanted to ask, did you sew the hackle pads and trim through some of the layers of the tutu or only to the top fabric layers? Thank you for your time and thank you for sharing your knowlegde.

I love your costume. It's the best one I've seen so far. I was planning on being Nina turned Black Swan for Halloween for the longest time, but I probably won't get the chance to do it this year since it will be costly at this time. I would really like to take the time to follow your steps and do it right with the help of a friend. I cannot wait for your future updates. Thanks for sharing the details. :)

You did a wonderful job here, thank you!

I've been dancing ballet for several years (though never with the thought of doing it professionally) and it was still difficult for me to differentiate beweteen double/Natalie Portman in the movie. I enjoyed it, it was a well done piece of entertainment, with beautiful dancing scenes. I believe, though, that it is important not to let people think too highly/unrealistically about certain people, especially Hollywood actors and let them believe that they're actually prodigies, "pulling this off", when they're actually NOT. I was never a marvellous dancer like Lane, but I poured my heart into it as long as I could, so it somehow made me slightly angry Natalie Portman was hyped as someone who learned all that stuff in 1.5 years...

Thank you for the detailed report, keep up the good work & take care =)

14" tutu platter. It looks rather large on me, I think, because the hips are about two inches to large. DragonCon was full of crowds; you learn how to maneuver them after a period of time. :)

What was the length of your tutu? 15"?

I am doing this for Halloween, but am hesitant to go full on platter tutu since I will likely be in crowds.

You looked fabulous by the way! I had a friend who went and I told him to look for you.

Amazing re-creation! You did a fabulous job. I am sculpting a clay figure of the Natalie Portman Black Swan character and will be costuming it in miniature (figure stands about 16 inches tall. I was looking for detailed photos of the tutu/ bodice and came upon this site. Thank you for posting such great reference photos as this has been a great help to me.

Thank you,

Actually, you can see those shoes throughout the movie. They are not street shoes per say. Dancers use this type of shoe to keep their feet warm: <a href="http://www.discountdance.com/dancewear/style_X251.html?pid=8340&Shop=Style&&skey=boots&search=true&SID=256932595" rel="nofollow">Sort of like this</a>. She wears the same foot warmers when she is sitting in the hallway practicing with her arms the Swan Queen's role in the beginning of the movie before her Swan Queen Audition. So, nope...not really any indicator there. Dancers wear those shoes backstage just to keep their feet warm.

Someone on another board made an excellent observation that I missed: When she goes into the dressing room to change into the Black Swan, she is wearing street shoes. It seems to me that she never even went on stage at all. She either killed herself right then and there after arriving late and realizing she was not able to dance her part, hallucinating the entire ballet as her fantasy of perfection as she was dying. That, or else the entire thing was in her head, death and all.

Black Swan is astonishing. It's been a while since a film has taken my breath away quite like it has, although I don't know why I was surprised, I've been a huge fan of Darren Aronofsky since Pi

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.

"I do think the media emphasized the training/preparation aspect too much, which led some people to have an impression that more of this movie’s ballet scenes have Portman dancing like a professional dancer. Were we lied to? Depends on how you see it, but if you see manipulation of the truth in order to better increase an image, they did lie."

I do think Sara Lane exaggerated her contribution to the movie too much, which led some people to have an impression that more of this movie’s dance scenes have Sara Lane in it.

I agree with the writer of the article, and since this is not my website and I don't have to be polite like she does. You're dumb. Most of your comments have been some random remark solely there to defend Portman without any actual knowledge of ballet.

I have been in the dance world for 3 years, and danced my self for 1.5 years, and I know little, I still have a hard time picking out everything. Whereas my girfriend has been dancing for 19 years, she sees things I don't. It's just a matter of understanding. And yes, with my dancing I can sometimes pull off a decent shape or two, but making shapes isn't really dancing. Portman made shapes, and beautiful ones, it is a part of dancing, but it isn't dancing. Four lines makes a rectangle but one line is just a line.

Lane is a wonderful dancer and how dare you say that she is anything but that! And then compare here to Portman. Also, again, you also say she is talking about "me me mememememe" if I recall, and she is not. I read the interview on WSJ. She is merely talking about how she wants to be known for her contribution, not to detract from what Portman did. And also to emphasize that ballet cannot be mastered in one year. To be honest, prior to stumbling upon this all today I thought Portman did the dancing. And I was thinking "Wow, that is absolutely insane that she learned all that so quickly." Then I heard she had had some previous training, and I thought, that must have been it.

So that is what Lane in responding too. That the public at large falsely believes that Portman did all this beautiful work. When in fact, she did not. The beautiful work was Lane's, and the not so difficult work was Portman.

Furthermore, the general public has no clue what ballet really is, they know it involves tutus and walking on your toes and that's about it. So, the director/creator had Portman train hard so that way in the film, the average viewer would not notice a difference because they don't know any better.

At first, Lane was ok with it. Then she felt like she was brushed under the carpet like a cheap whore, and she decided to speak out about it. It is common really, for someone to be ok with something at first and then as time goes on and it gets worse or no better they get upset and eventually speak out.

And about your comment on ballet dancers being socially inept. That isn't too far from the truth. Dance consumes dancers, it is their life, much like a computer nerd is consumed in hours of coding and programming. Of course this rule doesn't apply to everyone, but I would say, from the many dancers I know, they aren't exactly outspoken. Like Nina from the movie, she is quiet.

Natalie Portman 73% (69% U, 12% F, 38% P) | Sarah Lane 30%
Your numbers are weird since they would add up to 103%

Just so you know it, NP didn't keep the fact that a dance double was used secret.

She even mentioned Sara lane on Letterman (not by name though but there weren't many other ATB dancers on the set)

Keep up the good work. Always nice to see a more educated take (on ballet) on a situation.

ent0r: Thank you for the correction, I will make sure to update that. I agree with you, most people do focus on the face; it is our biological nature. I do remember seeing a post to another blog about the subject were the individual used the quote I included to suggest that Portman did the entire Prologue, not just the bourees at the end of what I am defining a "scene."

I personally found the zoomed in pointe work memorable because as the dancer sits down out of that, you see Portman's face for the first time, and she truly looks beautiful--not simply because I have studied ballet in the past.

Good point you have made to remember: not everyone is going to remember something "the most" all the same. It is entirely based on experience and what we find most appealing.

Thanks!

Concerning your 4th point:
It's Aranofsky who says it, and If may suggest that you shouldn't believe that "most people remember" "that beautiful footwork".

It's a movie. I would rather say that most of us pay attention to the face of the actor not the feet. Yes, even while dancing.

Most of us don't dance. and only a few grasp ballet enough to be actually able to scrutinise Natalies performance.

cheers Jerri .. mighty useful .. may say, just found Pods too, and Pods UI for creating WP plugins

.. am sure there's a place for each technique and, either way, have learnt from this post so cheers.
